Recognizing the dilemma of public edution's failure to resolve the achievment gap and drop out crisis for disadvantaged students, the author has realized teachers alone cannot resolve this dilemma. Policy makers must commit to taking a leadership role in forging school reform. This book outlines how our nation can address these challenges by transforming public eduction into a trauma-informed system that meets the learning needs of stressed and anxious students. This unique book also includes the format, guidelines, classroom activities, and the description of a successful program that constitute a trauma-informed eduction system and closes with advocacy recommendations.

 

Barbara Oehlberg, compelted MA, is an education and child trauma consultant in the state of Ohio. She has been a presenter and keynoter for the Harvard School of Public Health, New York State University and a long list of organizations throughout the country. She received the 1997 Humanitarian Award from the Center for Prevention of Domestic Violence and 1997 Volunteer Award from the NW Ohio Chapter, National Social Workers Association.

Barbara's career spans many levels, including:

Working as a college instructor, she taught a course on Family Dynamics: How it effects students' behaviors and ability to learn.

She has acted as a CO-investigator for a conference on Violence and Childhood Trauma: Understanding and Responding to the Effects of Violence on Young Children.

She has been a in-service Instructor on the topic of: Responding to the Needs of Young Children in a Hostile World.

She has been the project coordinator for Partners in Prevention for the Cleveland Public Schools.

Has acted as a consultant for the Ohio Department of Health.

Is the Founder and President of AsCEND: Association for Creative Education in the Nordonia District.

Barbara is also the author of, Making It Better: Activities for Children in a Stressful World, Redleaf Press, Minneapolis, MN.

Barbara has also Co-authored the book, Starting Out Right: Nurturing Children as Peacemakers with Kathy Mcgennis and is also co-author of Parenting for Peaceful Families
